Introduction

Today Indian Universities and Institutes of higher education and research have made a significant contribution in transmission of knowledge and enquiry into frontiers of science and technology. In the field of traditional subjects such as Arts, Commerce, Humanities and in pure Sciences, i.e. Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics as well as in areas of Technology, the Universities and higher education Institutes have been playing a leading role in transforming the country into a modern, industrialized, technologically advanced state. Indian universities and institutes of higher learning have been also contributing to promote the needs and aspirations of higher education and research to Indian students and scholars. These centers are extending their cooperation and friendship towards students of other developing countries too, where facilities for higher studies and research are not adequate. Therefore, a number of overseas students are drawn to Indian educational institutions which are providing high-quality education at very competitive prices.

India has some well-known educational institutions such as the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs), National Institutes of Technology (NITs), All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), Jadavpur University (JU), Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS),  and Indian School of Mines (ISM), etc. India's higher education system is the third largest in the world, after China and the United States. In 1950-51, India had only 27 Universities, which included 370 colleges for general education and 208 colleges for professional education (engineering, medicine, and education). Later, a large number of Universities and colleges are started to provide good quality of education and meet the need of growing population. Currently, there are 386 Universities/Institutes (comprising 164 state Universities, 39 Central Universities, 123 Deemed Universities, and 60 research institutes). In addition to these Universities and Institutes, there are 18,064 colleges. Total number of students enrolled in the Universities and colleges is about 11 million and out of which 13% are in University Departments and the rest in affiliated colleges (based on data of MHRD 2007). Now, various Deemed as well as private universities are being set and started to attract more and more students for higher education and research.
The success of all these Universities and institutions lies in its research and the strength of research come from an improved teaching. When teaching and research go hand in hand, no one can question the success of an institution, which leads to the success of the nation. Thus, for a strong academic growth research must be a core function of an institution/University. Ancient India had been credited with many discoveries in mathematics, astronomy, medicine and architecture and science. Indian universities and institutes of higher learning have included all these disciplines, but more emphasis is given on the discipline of science. The field of Science, even today, has made its place above all the subjects including computer science with the development of new techniques and is advancing continually.

Biosciences or Life sciences is the study of living things and it has several branches like Biology, Medicine, Anthropology, or Ecology that deal with living organisms such as plants and animals and their organization, life processes, relationships with each other as well as their environment. More generally, 'Life Sciences' is defined as all the sciences that have to do with living things, like plants, animals and human beings.

Life science is a promising field, where the modern science holds out a number of promises, as well as a number of problems. In the foreseeable future, researchers are able to create life itself in a test tube. Most diseases may be brought under control. This Science is also working towards control over the environment, e.g., dispersing hurricanes before they can endanger life or property and new sources of energy. Life Sciences encourage the fields of biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, biomedical technologies, life systems technologies, nutraceuticals, cosmeceuticals, food processing, environmental, biomedical etc. Life science, alone, is in harmony with nature, in accordance with the principles of vital organic existence, correct in science, sound in philosophy and ethics, in agreement with common sense, and successful in practice and a blessing to humankind. These days, the research and applications of Life Sciences is being carried out in almost all the recognized Universities, Agricultural Universities, Medical Institutes and other research organizations as well as in Industries. Similarly, several consultants and NGO’s are also doing research in the specific area of Life Sciences depending up on the expertise available. Also more emphasis is being given to the applied aspects of these basic Life Sciences. Technology based on life Sciences has resulted in many useful applications. Technology is the use of scientific discoveries. Organizations and institutions promote and devote the majority of their efforts in the various stages of research, development, technology transfer and commercialization in these fields. Some research organizations are doing exceptionally good quality research work and some organizations are lagging behind. This may be due to lack of resources, lack of collaboration between researchers and/ or lack of information about places, persons, area of the specialization and field of research etc. of the other researchers. To overcome from this lacuna, this online Directory in the form of search engine is developed.

This search engine is mainly divided in two categories as Experts’ and Directory. It can be used to searched and get the contact details of faculty or an expert which will aid in easy and quick communication. The Search can be made Subject wise, University wise, State wise and other multiple ways. From the list of faculty the Details of faculty can be searched, which provides all the details such as, Educational Qualification, the career details such as teaching and research experience, the areas of interest or research of the faculty , Ph. D Guidance of the faculty, Number of extramural Projects undertaken, Number of Patents. Consultancy provided, Publications related to subject: books and paper, Popular science articles, number of conferences chaired along with their special achievements, awards etc.
